CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Muscatine boys cross country program finished 13th on Thursday at the Rich Engel Classic, but head coach Chris Foxen had reason for optimism.
“All our varsity runners set a PR (personal record) today, so I know we’re heading in the right direction,” he said. “I was very pleased with the way we competed.”
Jason Kenyon led the Muskies in the 19-team field with a 33rd-place finish. The senior covered the 3.1-mile course at Birdsall Park in 17 minutes, 18 seconds. Sophomore Conner Dolan was 47th in 17:33.
Host and third-ranked Cedar Falls won the boys division with 52 points, followed by 14th-ranked Dubuque Senior (109) and 10th-ranked Southeast Polk (134).
In the girls race, Muscatine placed 14th in the 17-team event. Muskie sophomore Lindsay Brunson covered the 2.5-mile course in 16:50 – good for 51st place. Coach Tim Armstrong had just one senior in his top seven.
Freshman Sam Kistler completed the race in 17:55, while Dixie Cruz and Staci Eversmeyer finished in 18:02 and 18:03, respectively.
Fifth-ranked Linn-Mar, led by the 1-2 finish of Carolyn Newhouse and Brooklynn Kascel, won the girls meet with 88 points.
Muscatine runs at the Mid-Prairie Invitational on Tuesday in Wellman.

Wilton cross country teams win at Maquoketa
MAQUOKETA, Iowa – The Wilton boys and girls cross country teams dominated the competition Thursday at the Maquoketa Invitational.
Wilton finished with 20 points in the four-team boys division.
The Beavers’ Kyle Paulsen was the individual champion in 17 minutes, 8 seconds. Wilton’s Tyler Hartley (17:49), Grant Wakefield (17:56) and Paul Searcy (18:01) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the girls race, Wilton had the top-two finishers – Paige Wheeler and Becca Bartell – to beat second-place Maquoketa by 44 points. Wheeler ran a time of 16:21, while Bartell posted a 16:31. Mackenzie Holladay and Melanie Walde were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Durant-Bennett volleyball team sweeps Tipton
DURANT, Iowa – The Durant-Bennett volleyball team remained perfect with a 25-11, 25-15, 25-19 win over Tipton on Thursday.
No statistics were available.
The Wildcats (14-0, 3-0 CVC), who moved up a spot to seventh in the latest Class 2A ratings, play at the Marion Tournament on Saturday.
Falcons fight hard, but lose in three to IMS
KALONA, Iowa – Despite close scores in the first two games, the Louisa-Muscatine volleyball team couldn’t get over the hump in a 25-20, 25-21, 25-16 defeat to Iowa Mennonite on Thursday.
Megan Guldenpfennig had 13 digs for the Falcons, who had nine service aces. Marlee Shipp had five aces and Tiffany Hoffman served four. Offensively, Jordyn Schaper had a team-high five kills.
“We needed a match like this to get our confidence built back up,” assistant coach Tammy Bartenhagen said. “The thing that impressed me was their heart the whole match.
“What hurt us tonight was letting (IMS) get so far ahead at the beginning of every game. We need to work on a few things for the next game, but we are starting to move forward.”
Muskie JV golf team moves above .500
DAVENPORT, Iowa – Adam Hutton earned medalist honors Thursday with a 36 at Duck Creek Golf Course to help the Muscatine junior varsity golf squad upend Davenport Central, 154-172.
Muscatine (3-2) returns to action Monday at the Municipal Golf Course against Bettendorf.

Orion knocks off Rockridge
TAYLOR RIDGE, Ill. – Megan Blumenshine had eight kills to pace Orion past Rockridge in volleyball Thursday night, 25-20, 25-19.
Jen Krueger and Emily Woods each had seven assists for Rockridge (2-9, 1-2), while Erika Price led the offense with five kills. Price had three blocks, and Woods had two service aces.
Hannah Oak had five digs and Gillian Goodwin contributed four for the Rockets.
