Softball: Wilton lands five on Cedar Valley Conference first team

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Cedar Valley Conference champion Wilton placed five players on the first team all-conference squad announced Tuesday.

The Beavers, 13-1 in the CVC and 31-5 overall, finished fifth in the state in Class 2A.

Wilton coach Lance Pedersen and runner-up Durant coach Steve Hopkins were named co-coaches of the year.

Junior pitcher Rachel Brisker and freshman outfielder Avery Carter were unanimous selections for Wilton. Also on the first team for coach Lance Pedersen’s squad were junior catcher Kara Proctor, freshman shortstop Leah Duffe and sophomore third baseman Carlee Grunder.

Carter batted .380 with 11 doubles, two triples and six home runs for Wilton. Brisker, the Beavers’ ace on the mound, had an ERA of 0.91 with 288 strikeouts, 42 walks and five hit batters. She allowed only 22 earned runs in 170 innings pitched.

Also being named to the first team from Durant-Bennett were pitcher Kassie Krummel, a senior, and junior infielder Shelby Paustian. Both Krummel and Paustian were unanimous selections.

Durant finished the CVC with an 11-3 conference record and 27-7 overall.

Krummel’s ERA was 0.40 with 197 strikeouts and 11 walks. She allowed 12 earned runs in 212 innings pitched. Paustian batted .311 for the Wildcats with three doubles, two triples and 13 RBI.

The only other area player named to the CVC first team was West Liberty senior outfielder Taylor Feldman. She was also a unanimous selection.

Feldman hit .352 with four doubles and six RBI.

Wilton outfielder Dakota LaMaack, Durant catcher Jenny Paulsen and her teammate Gretchen Lilienthal, an infielder; and West Liberty infielder Ashley Montelongo were named to the second team.
