DAVENPORT, Iowa – It took a few games for Muscatine’s volleyball team to start clicking, but once coach Laura Proffitt’s volleyball team did, it was easy sailing for its 16th consecutive victory.
The Muskies took a
23-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-6 win over Davenport West to improve to 20-3 overall and 5-2 in the Mississippi Athletic Conference.
“In games three and four we played very well,” Proffitt said. “In games one and two, not so much. I think we played comfortable, back on our heels in the first two games and let them control the games. In games three and four, we controlled it.
“It shows we are increasing our mental toughness and are ready to play strong this weekend.”
Haylie Franklin led the attack for the Muskies with 17 kills, four assists, 19 digs, a block and was 14 of 17 serving with an ace. Emily Hasken added 13 kills, seven digs, a block and was 24 of 27 serving with five aces.
Jordan Walgren had 17 digs and was 15 of 16 serving with three aces. Julie Wunder handed out 35 assists and was perfect in nine serves.
The Muskies next travel to Durant Saturday for a round robin tournament. They will play Fort Madison, Grinnell, Davenport Assumption, Western Dubuque and Durant.

Muscatine swimmers handle Clinton, 114-40
CLINTON, Iowa – Muscatine claimed the top three spots in six events, competing in exhibition-only races for a pair of events as the Muskie swimmers overwhelmed the Clinton River Queens, 114-40.
Clinton won only three events and one of them was the final race in which Muscatine’s three 400 freestyle relay teams were for exhibition as all three finished well ahead of the River Queens.
“They didn’t have a very big team,” Muscatine coach Judd Anderson said. “They only had a dozen girls out.”
Individual wins for Muscatine included Hannah Eichelberger in the 200 freestyle, Avery Morgan in the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle, Sarah Martin in the 1-meter diving and Natalie Sturms in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
Swimming on the winning 200 medley relay were Laura Wood, Erica Henderson, Sturms and Lauren Weber. The winning 200 free relay team was made up of Morgan, Martin, Cenza Manjoine and Laura Ewalt.
Muscatine’s JV also won easily 110-46.

MHS Gold squad sweeps Davenport West freshmen
DAVENPORT, Iowa – The Muscatine freshman Gold volleyball team defeated Davenport West, 25-18, 25-11.
Coach Bill Ramsey’s team was led by Rebecca Hogan, who was 14 of 17 serving with nine aces and three kills. Taylor Borde was 8 of 10 serving with five aces and four kills. Angie Moeller was perfect in four serves with three aces.
The Gold team next plays Saturday at the Iowa City High Little Hawk Tournament.
Freshman football team runs record to 7-0
DAVENPORT — Alex Neda had a pair of touchdowns as the Muscatine freshman football team remained perfect with a 42-0 win over Davenport West on Tuesday night.
Brayton Shellady, Jon Crowe, Bryce Keeler and Drake Kulick also scored touchdowns for coach John Each’s team. Miguel Carrillo was 6-for-6 on point-after attempts.
Muscatine (7-0) returns home next Tuesday to face North Scott.
Columbus boys second
at its own invitational
COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa – Columbus Community’s boys and girls finished second and third in the team race at its own cross country meet on Monday.
