Briefs: Pearl City Rugby Club claims Midwest title

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Pearl City Rugby Club’s Black Bears captured the Division I Midwest Championship on Saturday with a 65-7 rout over the Detroit Tradesmen.

Keikiokalani Misipeka, Albert Tuipulotu and Heath Tessman each had a pair of tries for the Bears, while Seth Shoemaker, Jared Anderson, Sam Weier, Will Brown and Ryan Hawken all scored once.

“We pretty much did everything I said I wanted,” head coach Adam Friend told rugbymag.com. “Detroit came out hard like we thought, but we put in a good performance.”

It was the final match of the fall season for the Black Bears (9-0), who will resume their season in March.

Muscatine’s Cruz takes 26th at IATC Senior All-Star meet

AMES, Iowa — Muscatine senior cross country runner Dixie Cruz placed 26th on Saturday at the Iowa Association of Track Coaches’ Senior All-Star meet.

Cruz completed the 3.1-mile course in 22 minutes, 18 seconds. Wilton’s Mackenzie Holladay finished 33rd in 22:33 and Durant-Bennett’s Bryanne Duckett was 62nd in 24:04. West Des Moines Valley’s Mary Kenney won the girls’ race in 19:08.

Meanwhile, Muscatine’s Jason Kenyon placed 43rd in the boys race in 18:37. West Liberty’s Dylan Hillyer was the only other area boy to compete, placing 81st in 20:08.

Boone’s Brogan Austin set a new meet record with a time of 16:25 in winning the boys race.
