BURLINGTON, Iowa – The Muscatine girls’ cross country team finished the season with a fifth-place showing at the Class 4A regional meet Thursday.
Coach Tim Armstrong’s team scored 178 points to finish behind Iowa City West (40), Bettendorf (64), Pleasant Valley (73) and Burlington (97).
“We finished fifth, which I think is great under the conditions and with Iowa City at this meet,” Armstrong said. “I’m pleased with the effort.”
City West, Bettendorf and PV advance to next Saturday’s state cross country meet in Fort Dodge. PV’s Anne Martin was the individual champion of the 2.5-mile race in 15 minutes, 19 seconds.
Lindsay Brunson was Muscatine’s top finisher, finishing 24th in 16:41.
Brunson was followed by Dixie Cruz (29th), Sam Kistler (34th), Rachel LoBianco (45th) and Staci Eversmeyer (46th).
“The competition was really good,” Armstrong said. “It was a tough field and we ran well, especially with a young team. Dixie was our lone senior and she ran a good race. There was standing water on the course; it was pretty treacherous, but I’m kind of glad we went.”
Six of Muscatine’s seven runners on Thursday were freshmen or sophomores.
