ALEDO, Ill. – Muscatine entered the final round of the Mississippi Athletic Conference boys golf meet within striking distance of the lead.
The Muskies left Hawthorn Ridge Golf Club near the bottom of the pack.
Fighting high winds Monday, Muscatine finished seventh at the 10-team conference meet with a two-day total of 670. After shooting 320 in Saturday’s opening round and trailing leader Bettendorf by just 11 strokes, coach Jerry Teel’s team recorded a 350 during the final 18 holes.
“We fell way short of our team goal,” Teel said. “We had far too many big numbers on holes to allow us to salvage four good scores.”
Muscatine was 25 strokes behind champion Davenport North, which captured its first MAC golf championship.
After 13 golfers broke 80 in the opening round, only three cleared that mark Monday due to winds gusting at 30 to 35 miles per hour.
Austin Young posted the low round for the Muskies with an 84 and two-day total of 164 – finishing 14th in the individual race and third team all-conference. Jacob Koch was the only other Muscatine player to break 90 Monday with an 86.
“I was pleased with how Austin Young and Jacob Koch played,” Teel said.
North Scott freshman Bobby Wolfe followed his first-round 72 with an 82, but it was enough to hold off last year’s individual champion, Owen Bell of Davenport North, by a stroke for medalist honors.
Muscatine is off until traveling to the Class 4A district meet on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.
