MUSCATINE, Iowa – It has been almost 30 years since Muscatine has hosted a bowling event like the one coming to town this weekend.
Plamor Lanes will be hosting a Midwest Regional Tournament on Saturday and Sunday and a Pro-Am event on Saturday night. The regional consists of an open division and senior (50 and over).
“Back when I was on the (Professional Bowling Association) tour, I brought the tournament here for two years,” said Mike Berlin, owner of Berlin’s Pro Shop. “That was back in ’79 and ’80. Now (Plamor Lanes owner) Larry (Richardson) has an in with the PBA.”
Local bowlers Jeff Swank, Terry Thein, Al Jordan, Matt Weggen, Chad Bieri and Larry Richardson will take part in the tournament.
Both Weggen and Richardson are PBA members, but the rest qualified by winning tournaments.
A couple of the marquee names in attendance are Pete Weber and Steve Jaros. Weber, according to Richardson, is ranked third and has the most titles. He’s known to wear sunglasses while he bowls.
“He’s kind of a cult bowler,” Berlin said. “He’s a love him or hate him kind of guy.”
The tournament is expected to draw more than 100 bowlers to Muscatine.
“We’ve been working with the Holiday Inn – the hotel is sponsoring the event,” Leanna Richardson said. “The bowlers will be staying there and will be eating at restaurants here. This will bring in a great economic impact to the community.
“We have set this up as a charity. For every Pro-Am player who signs up, we are donating a portion from each one to Muscatine Charities. I have no doubt that we’ll reach and maybe go beyond our $1,000 goal.”
The Pro-Am will be an opportunity for amateur bowlers to bowl with the pros, not against them.
“Their job is to give (regular) bowlers who want it some tips if they need it,” Berlin said of the Pro-Am. “They will bowl with six different bowlers by changing lanes in three games.
“They are here to bowl with, not against regular bowlers.”
Leanna Richardson said spectators are welcome to watch the tournament. There will not be a cover charge.
There will be a practice session from 3-5 p.m. today with a chance to collect autographs. The A squad will begin bowling at 8 a.m. Saturday, while the B squad starts at 1 p.m.
The Pro-Am starts at 6:30 p.m. There are still spots open until 6 p.m. on Saturday.
“I know a lot of people don’t think they are good enough,” Berlin said. “It’s a chance to bowl with pros and you don’t get to bowl with pros very often.”
The finals of the Midwest Regional will be on Sunday. The number in the finals will depend on the entries.
“I don’t think people realize how big this is,” Leanna Richardson said. “Not every town gets this opportunity. The (financial) support has been tremendous, even in this economy.
Larry Richardson added, “We wouldn’t be able to do this without (the support). We are going to try to do this every year.”
