WILTON, Iowa – The Durant-Bennett volleyball team is off to a blistering start.

The eighth-ranked Wildcats improved to 13-0 on the season after posting a 5-0 mark at the Wilton Invitational on Saturday.

Durant, which finished first in the six-team pool play event, defeated Midland (21-11, 21-17), Wilton (17-21, 21-14, 15-9), Mount Pleasant (21-16, 18-21, 15-11), Mid-Prairie (21-11, 21-11) and Iowa Mennonite (21-11, 21-16).

The Beavers (5-8), meanwhile, finished third with a 3-2 mark. Wilton fell to Durant and Mount Pleasant (19-21, 17-21), but recorded wins over Mid-Prairie (21-19, 21-14), Iowa Mennonite (21-6, 21-14) and Midland (21-16, 21-15).

Junior Shelby Broders led Wilton’s offensive attack with 27 kills in the tournament. Leah Duffe had 35 digs, while Carlee Grunder dished out 64 assists.

In Wilton’s win over Iowa Mennonite, it had 13 ace serves, including eight from Avery Carter. The sophomore defensive specialist finished with 17 aces for the tournament.

Mount Pleasant took second in the tournament with a 4-1 mark.

Columbus’ Chaney earns fourth victory

ATKINS, Iowa – Columbus Community senior cross country runner Sam Chaney rattled off his fourth consecutive win Saturday, blitzing the field by 38 seconds at the Benton Bobcat Invitational.

Chaney covered the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 28 seconds as the Wildcats finished second to Tipton in the 14-team field with 77 points.

Columbus senior Jake Keller was fifth in 17:38, while Ruben Jasso was 11th in 18:20.

In the girls division, Columbus didn’t have enough runners to field a team score. Marina Ramirez and Caitlin Chaney finished 27th and 28th, respectively, to lead the Wildcats.

Durant-Bennett second at Monticello

MONTICELLO, Iowa – The Durant-Bennett boys and girls cross country teams each finished second Saturday at the Monticello Invitational.

Durant, which finished with 51 points on the boys side, was led by Deane Wichelt and Ben Fredrichs. Wichelt finished third in 17 minutes, 33 seconds while Fredrichs was fourth in 17:39.

Meanwhile, the girls ended with 67 points — 21 behind champion Monticello. Whitney Wolf was ninth in 17:16 to pace the Wildcats.

Davis County rolls past Columbus

BLOOMFIELD, Iowa – Columbus Community tailback Jared Eichelberger surpassed 200 yards rushing for the second time in three weeks, but Davis County’s football team cruised past Columbus, 47-12, Friday night in a Class 2A District 6 opener.

Eichelberger had 203 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries, but Davis County quarterback Colten Matthews completed 18 of 22 passes for 326 yards and accounted for five touchdowns.

Columbus (1-2, 0-1) returns home to play Sigourney-Keota this Friday.

Mid-Prairie wallops Louisa-Muscatine

WELLMAN, Iowa — Mid-Prairie all-state tailback Tanner Miller scored two rushing touchdowns and had a 66-yard punt return for a score to fuel the ninth-ranked Go-Hawks past Louisa-Muscatine, 55-0, Friday night.

Mid-Prairie (2-1, 1-0) scored 35 points in the second quarter to beat L-M by 50 or more points for the second straight year. Miller finished with 61 yards rushing on just 10 carries.
