Columbus' Chaney sets new record at home course

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa – Columbus’ Sam Chaney set a new course record in winning the Columbus Invitational held Monday at Cedarcrest Golf Course.

Chaney covered the 3.1-mile course in a blistering 15 minutes, 20 seconds to finish 1:08 ahead of second-place finisher Sean Conrad of Holy Trinity. Wilton’s Kyle Paulsen finished third.

Paige Wheeler of Wilton paced the Beavers by winning the girls’ portion of the meet in 17:24, 21 seconds ahead of WACO’s Madison Roth.

All seven of the Beavers finished in the top 10 at the meet for 21 team points.

Wilton made it a team sweep as coach Cory Garvin’s squad won the boys’ portion with 44 team points. Columbus finished second with 59.

Area school Louisa-Muscatine was second in the girls’ team scoring with 70 points. The Falcons were sixth in the eight-team boys meet with 197 points.

The Columbus girls were third in team scoring with 96 points. Individual Columbus results were not provided.

Durant goes 1-2 at Bellevue

BELLEVUE, Iowa – Durant-Bennett’s boys and girls cross country teams finished 1-2 at the Bellevue Invite on Monday.

The Wildcat boys won the meet with 26 points, with all five of their scorers finishing in the top 10. The girls were second behind Marquette, 37-60, thanks to two top-10 finishes.

Deane Wichelt was second in 17 minutes, 35 seconds for coach Jeremiah Costello’s team. Ben Friederichs was third, followed by John Hughes (fifth), Chase Exline (sixth) and Alex Wright (10th).

The top finisher for the Durant girls was Whitney Wolf in 17:02. Finishing 10th was Bryanne Duckett in 17:15.

Hillyer paces W. Liberty

KALONA, Iowa – Dylan Hillyer’s sixth-place finish led West Liberty’s cross country team at IMS on Monday.

Hillyer completed the course in 17 minutes, 48 seconds for his top-10 finish.

The Comets finished sixth in the meet behind area school Wapello (166-173).

IMS won its own meet, paced by individual champion Bill Spencer in 16:51.

Wapello’s girls finished last in the eight-team girls’ portion of the meet. The Raider of Williamsburg won the girls team title. West Liberty didn’t have enough runners to complete a team and individual results were not turned in by Wapello.

L-M falls in five games

LETTS, Iowa – Louisa-Muscatine had a hard-fought five-game loss against Highland in volleyball play Monday night.

The Falcons fell, 23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 10-15, to the Huskies.

“Our girls played with all their hearts tonight and left nothing on the court,” L-M coach Lori Bashore said. “They had some very exciting games. We have found our team and are working well together with this combination.”

Jordyn Schaper led the Falcons with 14 kills, five blocks, eight digs and three ace serves.

“They never let their spirits or energy go down tonight,” Bashore said. “I am proud of the girls.

“Our Falcons Nest was full of energy and helped us carry our spirits from game to game.”
