MUSCATINE, Iowa – Despite muddy and overcast conditions, Muscatine’s Jason Kenyon managed to beat his time from last week on the same course, in taking all-conference honors at the Mississippi Athletic Conference meet on Thursday at Discovery Park.

Kenyon, a senior and Muscatine’s top runner, beat last week’s time by 10 seconds and placed 14th – the final all-conference spot to be had – in 17 minutes, 59 seconds.

“It was much worse (than last week at the Muskie Classic),” Kenyon said. “The hills – I tried to run up and would slip down as much as you tried to run up. It made it harder.

“I didn’t see anyone fall down, but there were a lot of close calls, though.”

Pleasant Valley won the team title, 35-44, over Burlington. Marshall Moyer of Burlington won the individual title in 16:50.

Muscatine teammate Ryan Fick was running second among Muskies after the two-mile mark, but it was Reid Chandler who passed him to finish second in 18:46, good for 26th overall.

“On most courses, Ryan, he’s ahead of me – he’s got a better pace,” Chandler said. “But on this course, I tend to have a kick towards the end.”

Fick was right behind in 27th at 18:49.

Chandler said the course was slippery, but he figured out how to go unabated.

“I watched this kid from Burlington,” Chandler said. “He ran right in front of me and when I saw him slip, I saw where not to run.

“I think we all ran our best in the crappy conditions. I think we finished in the middle because we

didn’t have enough (runners) in the front pack.”

Muscatine finished sixth with 150 points. The Muskies ran one of their regular varsity runners, Conor Dolan, down in the fresh-soph race, in which he won in 18:12.

“It’s tough with all three age divisions,” Muscatine coach Chris Foxen said. “We want to put the best foot forward, but also run kids at their own age. We ran two kids who normally run varsity in the freshman-sophomore race and they performed with outstanding valor. Conor getting the championship will be something he’ll never forget.”

Kenyon said he reached his goal of topping his time from last week. Foxen was even more pleased than his top runner.

“Jason has been our leader all season, on and off the course,” Foxen said. “He went out and captured all-conference honors. No one on our team has put forth an effort like Jason. I’m happy to see he had success.”

Muscatine finished second in the JV boys race, led by Austin Czerwiec’s sixth-place finish. Also medaling was Skylar Kochuyt (ninth) and Duncan Eichelberger (11th). The Muskies freshman-sophomores were third. In addition to Dolan, Kevin Hughes medaled in 10th place.
