MUSCATINE, Iowa – After having to wait nearly a month for its season opener, the Muscatine girls swimming team made the most of its opportunity Saturday.
Led by a pair of individual victories from Haley Bartelt and a win by Arianna Calderon, the Muskies claimed their own invitational with 378 points at the Carver Swim Center.
Cedar Rapids Prairie/ Williamsburg was second in the six-team field with 287 points, followed by Keokuk (228) and Fairfield (203).
“It was good to get some competition,” Muscatine coach Judd Anderson said. “We’ve had a month of practice, and it gets tough to do that day after day and sometimes twice a day. Meets are the fun part.”
Bartelt, a junior, edged Keokuk’s Beckah Swan for the 200 individual medley title in 2 minutes, 27.23 seconds. Later, she beat Swan again in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:48.66.
Calderon and teammate Sarah Martin finished 1-2 in the 200 freestyle. Calderon, who teamed with Jennifer Littlejohn, Martin and Laura Ewalt to win the 200 freestyle relay, posted a time of 2:10.38 while Martin hit the wall in 2:12.46.
Martin, one of five Muskie divers, finished second with 170.65 points. Ali Failor was fifth.
Muscatine’s Hannah Eichelberger was runner-up in the 50 freestyle, finishing 0.01 seconds behind Fairfield’s Rachel Swanson. Natalie Sturms was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:11.58, while Littlejohn came in second to C.R. Prairie/ Williamsburg’s Katie Storey in the 100 breaststroke.
The Muskies begin a grueling eight-day stretch Tuesday night at Pleasant Valley. After facing the Spartans, Muscatine travels to Iowa City West on Thursday before hosting Bettendorf on Sept. 15.
“The first three dual meets are very tough,” Anderson said. “Those are probably the top three teams we’ll face all year.”
