MUSCATINE, Iowa – Muscatine High School turned the tables on Davenport Assumption in winning a 5-4 boys tennis match Tuesday at the MHS courts.
“We knew coming in that Assumption would be tough,” said Muscatine coach Adam Wiley. “We lost to them 5-4 last season, and it was nice to turn the tables on them and win by the same score this year.”
After splitting the six singles matches, Muscatine won two of the three in doubles to capture the victory. The doubles wins were by Kyle Allgood and Ben Chrisman, along with Austin Czerwiec and Nate Fillmore.
The singles winners for the Muskies came from Bryson Cale, Chrisman and Fillmore.

Allgood’s long day pays off
DAVENPORT, Iowa – Muscatine High School freshman Angie Allgood had a long day, but she emerged with a pair of wins that secured the Muskies’ 5-4 girls tennis win over Davenport Assumption on Tuesday.
After posting a long singles win over Assumption’s Melanie Blazevic, Allgood teamed with Hannah Eichelberger for a 6-2, 6-4 doubles win that was completed as darkness was setting in. Allgood split a pair of tiebreakers in her singles match with Blazevic before winning the deciding super tiebreaker (first to 10 points).
Coach Jim Barkema’s Muskies also got singles wins from Johnnie Jindrich and Kirsten Schneider. The other doubles win was posted by Schneider and Suhita Kakarala.
“It was a great team effort,” said Barkema. “I don’t know the last time that Muscatine beat Assumption.”

Hat trick keys Muskies
ELDRIDGE, Iowa – Muscatine High School unleashed a big second-half scoring deluge in rolling to a 6-2 Mississippi Athletic Conference boys soccer win over North Scott Tuesday night.
After battling to a 1-1 first-half standoff, senior team leader Edwin Arceo keyed the decisive run of five straight goals with a true hat trick (three straight goals). He completed his hat-trick with a penalty kick two minutes after getting his second goal at the 62-minute mark.
Juan Espinal and Ryan Meineke finished off the Lancers with back-to-back goals before North Scott scored a harmless goal late in the contest. Nolan Hagerty had scored Muscatine’s only first-half goal 14 minutes into the contest.
The victory squares coach Dave Schuler’s Muskies at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the MAC.

L-M golfers collect wins
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Louisa-Muscatine reached the victory column as the Falcon boys swept matches with Iowa City Regina and Lone Tree, while the girls collected a forfeit from Lone Tree in a golf meet Tuesday at the High Point Golf Course.
Coach Scott Kracht’s Falcon boys moved their record to 2-1 by shooting a 173 in the 9-hole meet. Lone Tree came in at 180 and Regina had a 175. L-M was led by Matt Gassen’s medalist round of 39.
Haley Sprague’s round of 52 led the L-M girls to a score of 225. Lone Tree had just three players, while Regina did not have a team.
“The boys played much better today and there were more consistent golf scores from the players,” said Kracht.
“This will give us something to build off of and improve as the season continues.”

COLUMBUS JCT., Iowa – Both Columbus’ boys and girls golf teams lost to Washington on Tuesday and the Wildcat girls also were handed a defeat by Mid-Prairie in their half of a triangular at Cedar Crest Country Club.
The boys lost 147-188 to the Demons while the girls fell 192-239 against Washington.
Mid-Prairie out-shot Columbus’ girls with a team score of 215.

Comets win at Wapello
WAPELLO, Iowa – West Liberty won a third of the events in posting a big margin of victory at the Wapello Indian Boys Track Relays Tuesday night.
The Comets piled up 122 points in out-running Central Lee (86 points) for the title. Other area finishers in the meet were Wilton in a fourth-place tie with 58 points, Wapello sixth with 52 and Columbus Community eighth with 24.
West Liberty got wins from Cody Hudson in the shot put, Ty Nortman (400 meters), Justin Meyers (200 meters), Tomas Lira (400 hurdles), the 4x800 and 4x400 relays.
Wilton posted wins in the shuttle hurdle and 1,600 medley relays. Wapello’s lone triumph came from Taylor Jacobsmeier in the high jump and Columbus Community’s Sam Chaney took home first in the 3,200 meters.

Frosh-sophs win shutout
MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Muscatine High School freshman-sophomore girls soccer team opened its season with a 3-0 shutout win over North Scott Tuesday night at the Muscatine Soccer Complex.
Coach Jeff Hunt’s Muskies wasted little time in putting North Scott into a hole it never emerged from. Tia Hagy scored an unassisted goal two minutes into the game.
Peyton Noll doubled the Muscatine lead at the 23-minute mark and then completed the scoring on a Becky Britcher second-half goal.

ELDRIDGE, Iowa – Muscatine High School racked up four first-half goals and then coasted to a 4-1 sophomore boys soccer win over North Scott Tuesday night.
Ozzy Carrillo scored twice in the first five minutes of the contest and then finished off the Lancers with goals by Fischer Herald and Jacob Koch.
North Scott spoiled Michael Haller’s shutout goalkeeping with a goal early in the second half.
