AMES, Iowa – Highlighted by Jake Varner’s pin in the finals, the Iowa State wrestling team won seven individual titles Saturday at the Harold Nichols/Cyclone Open.
Varner, who won his fourth Harold Nichols title, stuck Tyler Sorenson in 2 minutes, 27 seconds of his 197-pound final.
Andrew Long (125), Mitch Mueller (149), Andrew Sorenson (157), Jon Reader (165), Duke Burk (174) and David Zabriskie (Hwt.) also won championships for the Cyclones.
Sorenson defeated Iowa’s Derek St. John, who won the team’s wrestle-off earlier this month, 7-5 in the semifinals.
“We’re happy with where we’re at,” said coach Kevin Jackson, whose team is ranked second in the country behind Iowa. “Come Monday, it is back to work though and we’ll be hitting it hard.”
Iowa, which wrestled its backups at most of the weights, had two champions in 141-pounder Joey Slaton and 184-pounder Grant Gambrall.
Slaton won a 14-7 decision over Mario Morgan in the finals, while Gambrall knocked off Iowa State’s Jerome Ward, 6-2.
