DES MOINES, Iowa – The area cleared a lot of hurdles, literally, to get medals on Friday at the state coed track meet on Friday on the campus of Drake University.

In both Class 1A and 2A, the area took home a third-place medal in the 400 hurdles.

West Liberty’s Tomas Lira finished third in the 2A event, finishing behind two hurdlers who finished first and second separated only by five one-thousandths of a second (Tanner Miller of Mid-Prairie, 53.0620; and Matt Finn of Hudson 53.0674).

Lira clocked in at 53.99 and West Liberty remained tied for fourth place in the team standings in Class 2A with 19 team points.

Taylor Jacobsmeier was the third place finisher for Wapello in the 400 hurdles in 55.84.

Behind Jacobsmeier, Wapello is tied for 24th with six team points.

For Muscatine, Alex Bailey cleared the way to medal, qualifying for today’s final in the 110-meter high hurdles.

Bailey ran 15.22 to complete the seventh-fastest time to compete in the finals. He was the third of four qualifiers out of his heat, the first of three heats.

Also competing in the 400 hurdles was West Liberty’s Kira Yoder, who finished out of medaling with a 20th-place finish in 1:11.75.

In other action, Muscatine’s boys 4x100 relay team of Nick Boeyink, Jared Hetzler, Xavier Bou and Bailey did not make the finals with the

15th-fastest time in the preliminaries (44.06). The distance medley relay, Boeyink, Tyler Calegan, Hetzler and Jason Kenyon also finished out of medal contention with the 14th-fastest time in 3:37.93.

Also, the Muskies’ Alissa Martin missed out on a medal in the shot put, finishing 12th with a throw of 36 feet, 2.25 inches.

The Comets also scored with their distance medley relay, finishing sixth in 3:36.74. The team included Matt Pelzer, Cody Brenneman, Justin Meyers and Ty Nortman.

Information on the Class 2A boys and girls discus 4x100 Class 2A boys preliminaries and 2A girls high jump were not available.
