ELDRIDGE, Iowa — North Scott’s defense completely hancuffed the Muscatine football team on Friday night, handing it a 30-0 loss at Lancer Stadium.
The Lancers held the Muskies to only four yards of offense in the first half and no first downs.
In fact, the Muskies didn’t register a first down until the 10 minute, 38-second mark in the third quarter.
“Their front seven was pretty good,” said Muscatine coach Tony Napierala, whose team was shutout for the third time this season. “We tried to do things up front, and they did a good job of stopping us.”
Muscatine (1-7) experimented even further with its quarterback situation, giving TJ Husar some snaps at quarterback. The junior carried the ball six times for 21 yards.
Paul Jindrich threw the ball twice, but on his second attempt, he was picked off by Alex Rankin and the ball was returned 10 yards, setting up North Scott’s second touchdown of the game.
“We wanted to get our fastest kids the ball,” Napierala said. “We had a couple of bad snaps, but we weren’t as physical up front.”
Aaron Huber had 97 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns for the Lancers (5-3).
“Aaron’s a great kid,” North Scott coach Kevin Tippet said. “It’s not about stats, it’s about playing together. I thought our quarterbacks carried the ball well and played well, too.”
North Scott quarterback Cody Manthe was picked off by Nick Clemens with less than 10 seconds to go before halftime and Clemens returned it to the 12- yard line before he was tackled from behind and time had expired.
“That was a great play by Nick,” Napierala said. “It gave us a big spark in the second half. The kids played hard in the second half.”
Tippet was unhappy with Manthe’s play selection on the pass.
“I was a little upset about that,” Tippet said. “We wanted to take a shot and if it wasn’t there, kick a field goal. Cody made a lot of good decisions, though. I’m sure he’d like to have that pass back.”
After the first half, quarterback Nick Garretson got on track passing, completing his next six passes for 52 yards. But Muscatine, which finished with 109 yards of offense, couldn't find the end zone.
Meanwhile, North Scott tallied nine second-half points — a touchdown by Jacob Mirfield and a 34-yard field goal by Austin Miller.
“They have a good team,” Napierala said. “They have a good quarterback and they should do well in the next few weeks.”
Muscatine closes out its season Friday at Pleasant Valley, which blanked Davenport North, 41-0.
