MARENGO, Iowa – Wapello’s football team took care of business on its end Friday night with a 44-7 win over Iowa Valley, and got some help from Belle Plaine to earn the Indians’ first playoff berth in eight years.

Wapello (6-3, 4-3 district) earned the fourth and final spot in Class 1A District 5 after Belle Plaine beat Eddyville-Blakesburg. The Indians will travel to Guttenberg on Wednesday to face Clayton Ridge (8-1, 7-0) at 7 p.m.

According to mapquest, it’s 165 miles and nearly a 3-hour drive from Wapello to Guttenberg.

Indians running back Dylan Schrader scored three rushing touchdowns and quarterback Taylor Jacobsmeier added two more Friday.

“I’m proud of our guys,” head coach Todd Parsons said. “We had a good week of practice; we told the guys we take care of business and nothing else matters. Fortunately, we were able to do that (qualify).”

Because of rainy conditions, Wapello relied on the running game, racking up 384 yards on the ground, compared to only 35 through the air.

Jacobsmeier started things off with a 35-yard TD run, added another for 55 yards and Schrader capped off the first quarter with a 17-yarder.

“We had a good start,” Parsons said. “We scored early and that was key. Our kids played well.

“We’re looking forward to Wednesday.

“It’s nice to play some meaningful games in October,” he added. “I’m happy for our kids. They worked hard all year. They definitely deserve it.”
