Prep roundup: Muscatine swimmers sink West

DAVENPORT, Iowa – Five 1-2 finishes aided the Muscatine girls swimming team to an easy 122-63 dual victory over Davenport West on Tuesday.

Sarah Martin had four victories to lead the Muskies. She had wins in the 100 butterfly,  the diving portion of the meet and swam legs in the winning 400 freestyle and 200 medley relays.

Haley Bartelt added three victories for the Muskies, including two individual wins in the 400 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. She also swam a leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay.

Also earning wins for Muscatine were Arianna Calderon in the 50 freestyle and Jen Littlejohn in the 100 freestyle.

The Muskies, who are off until a dual meet at Clinton next Tuesday, also took the top spot in all three relays.

Muscatine’s JV recorded a 64-52 win over the Falcons.

MHS cross country teams 7th, 8th at Iowa City

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Muscatine’s boys cross country team finished seventh out of 10 and the girls were eighth out of 11 at the Iowa City West Invitational held Tuesday at the University of Iowa course.

The Muskie boys were led by Jason Kenyon’s 14th-place finish in 17 minutes, 4.49 seconds. Muscatine finished with 146 points.

“It was a night of PRs (personal best) and intense running for the Muskies,” Muscatine boys coach Chris Foxen said. “Reid Chandler really stepped it up today – he ran under 18:00 to set a PR. I am really impressed with Reid’s work ethic during the race today.

“Other Muskies who set PRs were Kevin Hughes, who is only a freshman, Dalend Pearson, James Luth, Ryan Fick and the team leader all season, Jason Kenyon.”

Marshalltown won the team title with 45 points, and the individual champion was Iowa City West’s Frank Canady in 15:43.25.

Crossing the finish line first for coach Tim Armstrong’s girls squad was Lindsay Brunson in 27th place in 16:16.

“Lindsay Brunson’s all-time PR led the Muskies to their finish,” Armstrong said. “Season PRs were garnered by Megan Sweere, Dixie Cruz and Hannah Peck. All-time PRs were had by Rachel LoBianco, Sam Kistler and Staci Eversmeyer.”

Iowa City West won the team title with 28 points and Mahnee Watts of Bettendorf won the individual title in 15:00. The Muskies scored 216 points for their finish.

The next meet for both teams will be Saturday at Clinton.

MHS freshman purple team stays unbeaten

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Muscatine freshman purple volleyball team ran its record to 10-0 with a

25-15, 25-17 victory over Clinton on Tuesday.

Freshman football team tackles Clinton, 31-14

MUSCATINE, Iowa — Tyler Lloyd had two touchdowns while Jon Salazar, Brayton Shellady and Zack Clements also scored for the Muskie freshman in a 31-14 triumph over Clinton on Tuesday night.

Muscatine (6-0) plays Davenport West next Tuesday at Brady Street Stadium.
