MUSCATINE, Iowa – Thanks to a hot putter, Brody Smock shot a 76 Tuesday at Geneva Golf and Country Club to ignite the Muscatine boys golf team past Burlington, 318-344, in an 18-hole dual.

Smock, the meet’s medalist, needed just 24 putts in his round.

“That’s unheard of at Geneva,” Muscatine coach Jerry Teel said. “I’m really happy for him being a senior.”

Austin Young had a 79, while Jacob Koch and Tyler Askren followed with an 81 and 82, respectively.

Teel has finalized his lineup for the upcoming Mississippi Athletic Conference and district meets.

Josh Anderson, Michael Canfield, Drake Decker, Smock, Koch and Young will comprise Muscatine’s top six.

“With Brody and Austin today, we’ve got four guys now that have shot in the 70s this year,” Teel said. “And Drake is just two holes away. He shot an 84 today and he had a double on 13 and a triple on 18. If he cleans that up, there’s five shots right there.

“The nice thing now is, we’ve got some practice time to work on things and get better.”

Muscatine is off until playing at the Grayhound Invitational in Burlington on Monday.

Muscatine volleyball squad fights off Assumption in four

DAVENPORT – After dropping the opening game Tuesday night, Muscatine’s volleyball team stormed back with three straight victories to upend Davenport Assumption, 21-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-20.

Haylie Franklin compiled 21 kills, 30 digs, five blocks and was 15-for-15 serving to aid the visitors. Emily Hasken had 13 kills, three blocks and three service aces.

“We definitely gave them some points in the first game, but we corrected our mistakes, got real tough mentally and got the job done in games two, three and four,” Muscatine coach Laura Proffitt said.

The turnaround started with passing, Proffitt said.

Jordan Walgren had a match-high 37 digs, and setter Julie Wunder dished out 38 assists.

No. 15 Muscatine trailed in Game 4, but Franklin went on a seven-point serving run to end the match.

“It’s tough having MAC matches back-to-back,” said Proffitt, whose team defeated Burlington on Monday. “You have no time to work on your mistakes or prepare for the opponent.

“We’re definitely building some momentum and the girls are getting confidence.”

The Muskies (6-3, 2-2 MAC) return to action Saturday at the Keokuk Tournament. The seven-team round-robin event features Muscatine, Columbus Community, Keokuk, Fort Madison, Holy Trinity, Central Lee and West Burlington/Notre Dame. Holy Trinity is rated 12th in Class 1A.
