DURANT, Iowa — The Muscatine High School’s volleyball season is turning into something magical.

After a sluggish start to the season, the Muskies continued their dominance Saturday with five wins at the Durant Classic to see their win streak reach 21 consecutive matches.

“We’re playing well,” head coach Laura Proffitt said. “We played together, and we didn’t lose a game all day.

“We got contributions from a lot of players, and we’re just doing a great job right now of coming together. It’s been a lot of fun.”

In the round robin tournament, the 15th-ranked Muskies (25-3) posted victories over Fort Madison (21-9, 21-15), Grinnell (21-11, 21-15), Western Dubuque (23-21, 21-10), Davenport Assumption (21-9, 21-8) and eighth-ranked (2A) Durant-Bennett (21-16, 21-13).

Senior Haylie Franklin ignited Muscatine’s offensive attack with 43 kills. Emily Hasken had 19 kills, while Tia Hagy and Allison Curry each compiled 12.

Setter Julie Wunder recorded 83 assists for the tournament.

Defensively, libero Jordan Walgren had 39 digs, followed by Franklin’s 33 and Ashley Hogenson’s 24.

Franklin also had 13 blocks and was 34-for-34 serving with seven aces.

Hasken had 15 digs, nine blocks and was 37 of 39 serving with seven aces.

Curry chipped in eight digs and was 36 of 38 serving with six aces.

Muscatine has two weeks remaining in the regular season. Proffitt’s club is at home Tuesday for a conference tussle against North Scott.

Meanwhile, Durant compiled a 4-1 mark Saturday.

Despite the loss to Muscatine, John Walsh’s squad had victories over Davenport Assumption

(20-22, 21-15, 15-10), Western Dubuque (21-12, 26-24), Fort Madison (21-16, 21-10) and Grinnell (21-14, 21-15).

The Wildcats (30-5) are at home tonight in the semifinals of the Cedar Valley Conference tournament.
