VAN METER, Iowa — Wilton pitcher Drew Freie had the opportunity to hang with a baseball Hall of Famer on Saturday.
Freie, a recent Wilton graduate, won the Bob Feller Award as the top Class 2A pitcher in Iowa.
Freie and co-winners Aaron Brown (New London) and Matt Dermondy (Norwalk) were honored Saturday at the Bob Feller Museum.
Freie, who also starred at shortstop, was 10-1 with a 1.22 ERA and 122 strikeouts this past summer. He also batted .483 for the Beavers, who finished with a 29-7 record and reached the Class 2A substate final.
In addition, Freie was named first-team all-state by the Coaches Association and second-team all-state by the Iowa Newspaper Association. He also attended the 33rd annual All-Star series in Carroll and played for the Small Schools East.
Freie will play baseball at Des Moines Area Community College.
The Bob Feller Award is given yearly to the top high school senior pitcher in each Iowa classification, based on statistics and overall performance.
Feller, 88, was inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1962. He accumulated 266 pitching wins in 18 seasons.
