LETTS, Iowa – Down 15 points going into the fourth quarter, Louisa-Muscatine’s football team mounted a furious comeback to defeat rival Columbus Community, 36-35, Friday night.
Madison Chandler scored a touchdown with 55 seconds left and Brode Hills scored the two-point conversion as the Falcons pulled out the victory.
“They believed and played hard,” L-M coach Guy Dierikx said of his team. “This was a great victory for us and our program. Ultimately, it will help establish our program. The guys did a good job. This was the first win ever for our senior class over Columbus.”
It snapped a 13 game losing streak in district play for L-M. The Falcons’ last district win was a 24-14 victory over Durant on Sept. 28, 2007.
Chandler carried the ball 14 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Hills added 19 carries for 99 yards and two more scores. Hills also had a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Quarterback Lucas Kemp scored on a pair of two-point conversions.
Defensively, Dexter Bieri had 15 tackles to lead L-M (2-3, 1-2 district).
The Falcons, who are at Sigourney-Keota next week, out-gained Columbus (1-4, 0-3) 397-329 in total yardage.
Columbus’ statistics were unavailable at press time.
Iowa City Regina’s defense handcuffs Wilton, 35-0
WILTON, Iowa — Iowa City Regina’s defense was up to the task again Friday night.
After yielding just 16 points in their first four games, the Regals blanked Wilton 35-0 in a Class 2A District 5 contest.
The Beavers (2-3, 1-2 district) were held to just 76 yards of total offense and turned the ball over four times.
Zach Pechous had three touchdowns for the Regals (5-0, 3-0), but none of them came on offense.
Pechous had 65- and 82-yard punt returns for touchdowns and a 35-yard interception return for a score.
Daniel Larew opened the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter.
Alec Crawford had seven solo tackles for Wilton, while Nate Fratzke registered six. Brandon Van Zandt had two tackles for loss and a quarterback sack.
Wilton returns to action next week at West Liberty.

Wapello registers key road win at Pekin, 38-29
PACKWOOD, Iowa – Wapello quarterback Taylor Jacobsmeier completed 16 of 23 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns as the Indians knocked off Pekin, 38-29, in a Class 1A District 5 tilt.
Jacobsmeier has 15 touchdown passes and no interceptions for the season.
Jacob Lafayette hauled in nine catches for 158 yards and a touchdown for Wapello, which improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the district.
Three second-quarter scores put Wapello up for good, including a 40-yard touchdown catch by Dylan Schrader, a 2-yard touchdown run by Jacobsmeier and an 18-yard field goal by Jacobsmeier.
Pekin out-gained Wapello on the ground, 348-45.
The win keeps the Indians in the hunt for the playoffs. They are tied with Pekin for second place in the district, a game behind West Branch.

MHS sophs rout North
MUSCATINE, Iowa – Muscatine’s sophomore football team overwhelmed Davenport North from the start en route to a 35-6 victory on Friday night.
Earl Wooten rushed seven times for 75 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Muskies to the easy victory.
Austin Sink passed for a little more than 100 yards and completed 70 percent of his throws.
Wooten rushed for two first-half touchdowns and Sink completed a 20-yard pass to Woodburn with 34 seconds left in the second quarter as the Muskies took a 21-0 lead into the break.
Tyler Lloyd caught four passes for 69 yards in the first half.
Kris Treiber returned a Ronnie Chhim pass 21 yards for a score and Jorge Galvez added a 15 yard run to cap scoring.
It was the third win in a row for the sophomores, who travel to Clinton next Friday night.
