CLINTON, Iowa – In muddy conditions, the Muscatine boys cross country team finished ninth Saturday at the Clinton Invitational.

Jason Kenyon was Muscatine’s lone medalist with a 25th-place finish in 18 minutes, 13 seconds.

“Jason leads by example, and today he showed the rest of the Muskies how to run in the mud,” Muscatine coach Chris Foxen said.

Ryan Fick was 39th in 18:31 for Muscatine.

“This was not a day to try for a P.R. (personal record),” Foxen said. “The course was saturated by two days of rain. Every athlete for the Muskies embraced the conditions and competed well.”

Durant-Bennett finished 12th in the varsity division. Deane Wichelt just finished outside the top 10 in 17:46.

The Muscatine freshman and sophomore team took second behind Pleasant Valley.

Conor Dolan and Kevin Hughes had top-10 finishes in 18:35 and 19:05, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Muscatine girls were 17th in the varsity division. Dixie Cruz led the Muskies in 72nd place.

“The Muskies competed well under horrible conditions as the course was muddy and sloppy from previous races,” head coach Tim Armstrong said.

“A great team race against some of the top-ranked teams in the state.”

Durant was 13th, led by Whitney Wolf’s 60th-place finish in 17:46.

Meanwhile, the Muscatine freshman and sophomores won its division with 41 points.  Lindsay Brunson won the race in 16:50, while Sam Kistler was second in 17:24.

Muscatine hosts the Muskie Classic at Discovery Park on Tuesday. The freshman-sophomore boys race starts at 4:15 p.m. The varsity girls will run at 4:40 p.m., followed by the varsity boys at 5:05 p.m.

Pair of fumbles lead to setback for MHS sophs

CLINTON, Iowa — Wet, sloppy playing conditions marred the Muscatine sophomore football team Friday in a 16-7 loss to Clinton.

The River Kings keyed on a pair of second-quarter fumbles to take a 16-7 lead at halftime.

But a pair of Muskie fumbles in the last 1:15 of the second quarter helped the River Kings take the lead.
