MUSCATINE, Iowa – With Davenport North’s team consisting of only eight swimmers, Muscatine had no troubles in downing the Wildcats on Tuesday night, 139-39.

The Wildcats managed only one win against coach Judd Anderson’s squad, who allowed all of his swimmers to compete in at least one varsity event during the evening.

“We tried to let everyone swim,” Anderson said. “Everyone got to be a varsity swimmer tonight, and we had some good swims.

“They had one of their girls swim the 200 free relay and then turn around and do the backstroke. You never want to do that.”

North coach Julie McFarland said it’s a problem not having that many swimmers.

“We don’t have the numbers,” McFarland said. “Most teams (in the MAC) are bigger than ours.”

Muscatine finished 1-2-3 in seven events, sweeping all three relays. Laura Wood led the Muskies with three wins. Earning two victories each for the Muskies were Laura Ewalt, Meredith Baird, Lauren Weber, Sarah Ross and Haley Bartelt.

Also earning individual wins for Muscatine were Kathleen Pusateri, Sarah Martin and Hannah Eichelberger.

The closest event North competed with Muscatine with was in diving.

The Wildcats’ Marguerite Delvecchio finished 3.65 points behind Martin as the Muskie senior took the event with 185.45.

Anderson said his team, which hosts Burlington in its final dual for senior night next Tuesday, needed a meet like tonight.

“The last three weeks have been disastrous,” Anderson said. “We’ve had illness, injuries and the pool heater wasn’t working so we had to go elsewhere.

“Hopefully, we’ll get ready for the regional, which we host. That should be interesting because we should be comfortable in our own pool. I’m looking forward to it.”

Muscatine only competed in three JV events to take that portion of the meet, 33-2.
