West Liberty takes 8th in Class 2A

DES MOINES, Iowa – Despite taking fourth in the 4x400 relay, West Liberty fell from fourth to eighth in the final Class 2A boys team standings at the coed state track meet Saturday on the Drake University campus.

The Comets foursome of Tomas Lira, Mason Garcia, Justin Meyers and Ty Nortman were fourth in the 4x400, clocking in at 4 minutes, 29.50 seconds.

West Liberty scored 29 team points to finish eighth as a team. Fort Dodge St. Edmond won the Class 2A title with 62 points.

Muscatine’s Alex Bailey stayed true to his preliminary time in the 110-meter high hurdles, finishing seventh in the event in a time of 15.29. Behind Bailey’s finish alone, the Muskies scored two team points, good for 35th in the Class 4A team race.

Columbus Community’s Sam Chaney scored again for the Wildcats, placing seventh in the 1,600-meter run. He timed out at 4:29.50. With his two finishes (also scoring in the 3,200) Columbus finished 36th in the Class 2A team race with six points.

In girls action, two area competitors ran the 800. Class 4A saw Rachel Price run the event in 2:23.39, good for 17th. Wilton’s Paige Wheeler ran the Class 2A event in 2:28.88, for 20th place.

The Louisa-Muscatine girls sprint medley team of Lyndsey Leopard, Taylor Rinnert, Emily Luttrull and Rhea Veal were 20th in 1:55.56.
