Prep cross country: Paulsen, Beavers run to Cedar Valley title

WILTON, Iowa – Kyle Paulsen ignited Wilton to the Cedar Valley Conference boys’ cross country championship Thursday at Wahkonsa Country Club. 

Paulsen, ranked 17th among Class 2A individuals, ran the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 42 seconds to capture the individual title.

Tyler Hartley, Paul Searcy and Grant Wakefield all finished in the top 10 to help the Beavers finish with 40 points — 21 better than Iowa City Regina.

Durant-Bennett finished fifth in the boys division. The Wildcats were led by fifth-place finisher Deane Wichelt in 16:53.

West Liberty, paced by Dylan Hillyer’s fourth place, was sixth overall.

Wilton finished runner-up to seventh-ranked Iowa City Regina 32-53 in the girls race. The 10th-ranked Beavers were led by Paige Wheeler, who finished fourth in 15:46.

Mackenzie Holladay and Becca Bartell also finished in the top 10 for Wilton.

Iowa City Regina’s Nicole Kleinmeyer won the individual title in 14:56.

Durant was fourth in the girls’ team standings. None of the Wildcats’ individual results were available.

Wapello boys finish 3rd at Lake Darling Classic

BRIGHTON, Iowa – Wapello’s boys cross country team finished third at the Lake Darling Classic on Thursday.

The Indians scored 89 points to finish behind IMS (51) and Lone Tree (84).

The Wapello girls finished sixth in the six-team field with 204 points. Lone Tree was the girls’ team champion with 48 points.

Bill Spencer of Iowa Mennonite won the boys individual title in 14 minutes, 27 seconds.

No individual results were available for Wapello.

Wapello’s teams are off until it hosts the Class 1A regional meet on Thursday.
