Muskies third at Burlington meet: Prep Roundup

BURLINGTON, Iowa – The Muscatine boys golf team finished third Monday afternoon at the 12-team Burlington Grayhound Invitational.

Josh Anderson paced the Muskies with a 6-over 78, good for sixth place individually, at the Burlington Country Club.

“He couldn’t have shot any higher than 78,” Muscatine coach Jerry Teel said. “It should have been 74 or 75, but he had some putting woes. For him, though, it was good deal to see him back in the 70s.”

Drake Decker had an 84 for Muscatine, while Michael Canfield and Brody Smock shot 85 and 86, respectively.

Ottumwa shot a blistering 309 to win the event by 17 strokes over Bettendorf. Muscatine finished with a 333, followed by Burlington (337) and Davenport Assumption (342). Ottumwa’s Marcus Giltner was the meet medalist with an even-par 72.

Adam Hutton had an 85 to lead the Muskie JV squad, which finished 10th at 376.

The Muskies return to action Thursday at Geneva Golf & Country Club against Davenport Assumption and Davenport Central in a triangular meet.

Durant-Bennett wins in four

STANWOOD, Iowa – It took four games, but Durant-Bennett dispatched the North Cedar volleyball team, 3-1, on Monday night.

The Wildcats defeated the Knights, 25-11, 17-25, 25-18, 25-20 to improve to 19-2 overall and 4-2 in the Cedar Valley Conference.

Renee Telsrow continued her strong attack with 16 kills. She added 11 digs and three ace serves. Shelby Paustian added 14 kills, 11 digs and four ace serves.

Durant travels to West Liberty on Thursday for a CVC showdown with the Comets.

Wilton XC places third, fifth

SOLON, Iowa – Wilton’s cross country teams finished third and fifth to lead the area runners at the Solon cross country meet held Monday.

Coach Cory Garvin’s boys’ team finished third and the girls were fifth in the 10- and nine-team meet, respectively.

Tipton was the boys’ team champion with 59 points and Williamsburg won the girls’ meet. Connor Smock of Mt. Vernon-Lisbon was the individual boys champion while Northeast’s Morgan Casey won the girls title.

The Beavers scored 67 points in the boys’ portion of the meet with three runners in the top 10 while the girls, led by Paige Wheeler’s top-10 finish, tallied 129 points to finish ahead of Durant-Bennett with 148.

Durant’s boys were fifth with 121 points and West Liberty was seventh with 183.

MHS golfers eke out win

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Muscatine’s JV golf team squeaked out a dual win over Bettendorf on Monday afternoon at Muscatine Muni, 173-174.

Both shooting low scores for the Muskie JV were Brooks Wagner and Cameron Miller, who each shot 42.

The meet medalist was Bettendorf’s Bobby McKissick with a 41.

Muskie frosh go to 5-0

DAVENPORT, Iowa – Bryce Keeler scored two touchdowns as the Muscatine freshman football team defeated Davenport North, 40-16, on Monday.

The Muskie freshmen improved to 5-0 with the convincing win for coach John Each’s squad.

Also scoring a touchdown apiece for the Muskies were Zac Safley, Zack Smith, Jon Salazar and Alex Neda. Miguel Carrillo kicked four extra points to complete scoring.

Muscatine next plays on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at home against Clinton.
