DES MOINES, Iowa – Area school West Liberty currently sits fourth in the Class 2A boys team standings after the first day of the coed state track meet on the Drake University campus.

The Comets scored 10 team points on Thursday, helped by a third place finish by Ty Nortman in the 400, a fifth by Cody Hudson in the shot put and an eighth place finish by Justin Meyers in the long jump.

Also running in the 400 from the area and scoring was Wilton’s Marcus Wagman, who placed eighth in the event as the Beavers are tied for 30th with one team point.

The only other area competitor who scored points was Columbus’ Sam Chaney, who finished fifth in the 3,200-meter run, completing the race in 9 minutes, 56.03 seconds. Behind Chaney’s finish, the Wildcats are in a four-way tie for 20th place with four team points.

The leader in Class 2A is Fort Dodge St. Edmond with 20 points.

Muscatine was turned away in a couple of events as the boys shuttle hurdle relay was called for a false start. Senior Alex Bailey just missed out on qualifying for the finals in the 100, finishing 10th in 11.09.

In Class 1A, Nick Eversmeyer just missed on scoring for Wapello, finishing 11th in the shot put with an effort of 46 feet, 9 inches.

In girls action, Louisa-Muscatine’s Lyndsey Leopard was 15th in the long jump (15-3.75) and the Muscatine 4x800 relay of Rachel Price, Haylie Franklin, Angela Karkosh and Allison Kisner were 19th in 10:13.50.

Events that were run, but no information was available included the 3,200 meter run in Class 1A, the Class 4A 4x800 run and the 200 preliminary in Class 2A.
