COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa — Raymond Leroy Galitz, 95, of Columbus Junction, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at Colonial Manor in Columbus Junction.
The Rev. Al Coffin will officiate. Burial will be in the Columbus City Cemetery with full military rites provided by the Allen Wright Hanft Post No. 100.
A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in his name.
Casketbearers will be Paul Steward, Pat Steward, Mike Galitz, Amanda Galitz, Kevin Seifert and Dori Marten.
Raymond Leroy Galitz was born on Oct. 24, 1914, in Low Moor, Iowa, the son of Herman and Fanny (Newmarch) Galitz.
On June 16, 1937, he married Geraldine Seifert in DeWitt. Following her passing, he was united in marriage to Marian Jean Rutt on Dec. 29, 1984, in Columbus Junction.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as a mechanic for Allis Chalmers in Donahue, then Abe O’Donnell as a logger and truck driver in Columbus Junction, and retired from Rath Packing. He was a past member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Columbus Junction, past member of the Donahue American Legion, current member of the Columbus Junction American Legion, Allen Wright Hanft Post No. 100. He was an avid Cubs fan who enjoyed fishing, golfing and spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren.
He will be dearly missed by his children, Patricia Kroeger of Donahue; Judy Steward and her husband, Bill, of Long Grove; and Dennis Galitz and his wife, Ruth, of Columbus Junction; special “son” Jim Seifert and his wife, Leona, of Donahue; four step-children, Suzanne Moeller and her husband, Robert, of Mount Pleasant, Mich.; Carolyn Whitcher of Cedar Rapids; Richard Rutt of Beaverton, Ore.; and Robert Rutt of San Francisco, Calif.; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, five step-grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Millie Smith of Davenport; John Galitz and his wife, Rose, of DeWitt; Jo Brennemann and her husband, Todd, of Des Moines; and Grace Johnson and her husband, Bob, of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Geraldine and Jean, four sisters, Vera, Alice, Minnie and Fern; three brothers, Bill, Harold and Harry and one son-in-law, Duane Kroeger.
