Service: 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, Fellowship Baptist Church. Visitation: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Mitchell Family Funeral Home.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — Herbert Drumm, 77, Marshalltown, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at Iowa River Hospice House.

 Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Mr. Drumm was born May 19, 1932, at home in Muscatine County.  He was the son of Peter and Caroline (Rinerex) Drumm.  He was raised in West Liberty by his foster parents, James and Mattie Smallwood.  He attended school in West Liberty.  He married Karen Tietge Jan. 13, 1957, at the Christian Church in Nichols.  The couple lived in Muscatine, Iowa City, and moved to Marshalltown in 1967. 

He worked as a farm hand around West Liberty and Muscatine.  He then worked at Western Mill, retiring in 1983 due to a back injury.  He enjoyed barbecue grilling, gardening, doing yardwork, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Karen, of Marshalltown; his children, Kay Cartwright and husband, Jay of Marshalltown, Herbert E. “Gene” Drumm (Diane Bown) of Marshalltown, Barbara Ramirez and husband, Daniel of Marshalltown, Janice Key and husband, Bobby of Albany, Ore, and Kenneth Drumm (Laura Smith) of Marshalltown; 10 granddaughters and 10 grandsons; nine great-grandchildren and one on the way; his sisters, Susabelle Marks and husband, Lyle of Springfield, Mo., and Hazel Plum and husband, Steve of Austin, Texas; and several foster brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and foster parents, his sister-in-law and brother-inlaw, Charlotte  and Vernon Stonum, LaVerne Cook, and Homer Tietge; his grandson, Daniel A. Ramirez, and a son, James Drumm.
