WAPELLO, Iowa — Robert Wayne "Bob" Pogemiller, 81, of Wapello, died Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at his home.

  His body will be cremated.

The Rev. Erv Smith will officiatie.  Burial will be at the Wapello Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established.

Mr. Pogemiller was born March 23, 1928, the son of Donald McCloud and Mildred Fern Baird Pogemiller, in Morning Sun.  He married Wanda Jean Grim Jan. 17, 1948, in Wapello.

He attended school in Morning Sun and then graduated from Wapello High School in 1945.  He worked for a number of years for his father at the Wapello Locker Plant.  He then worked for Standard Oil for a few years.  He then managed the Coop petroleum products at the Farmers Elevator in Wapello until he retired in 1990.  He notably was the first petroleum manager in Iowa to provide ethanol.

He was active in his community in many ways.  Throughout the years he was a volunteer fireman, helped with little league, was a referee for basketball and football, helped in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, was a charter member of the Indian Hills Golf & Country Club where he ran a multi-year annual fundraiser for the men’s stag, served on the Wapello homecoming committee as president for several years, and was a member of Ducks Unlimited. 

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Wapello, the Masonic Lodge No. 5 A.F. & A. M., the KAABA Shrine, and the State Bank of Wapello Board of Directors.

He was a lifelong sports enthusiast, himself being an outstanding baseball/softball player in his youth.  He enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sports. 

He was an avid fisherman in retirement who specialized in catching catfish.  He enjoyed pheasant, deer, and turkey hunting and was known as an excellent marksman. 

Spring and summer found him growing flowers, tomatoes, and locating just about every mushroom in Louisa County.  Driven by the desire to be a descent human being, he was a good friend to many.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda; a son, Rick Pogemiller and wife, Kay of Bellevue; two daughters, Denise Whipple and husband, Jim of Wapello and Jayne McCulley of Muscatine; nine grandchildren, Clint, Matt, and Scott Pogemiller, Marc Whipple, Kimberley Rossiter, Allison Malandra, Lindsey Whipple, J.R. and Tanner McCulley, ; seven great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Tom Pogemiller and Jim Pogemiller both of Wapello. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Wilda Wiley; and two brothers, Dwight and Jerry.
