MUSCATINE, Iowa – Richard Paul Oberhaus, 84, of Muscatine, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City.
Chaplain Harold Schutte of Iowa Hospice will officiate the service. After the service a luncheon will be held at Sunnybook, 3315 Diana Queen Drive.
Memorials may be made to Iowa Hospice or Senior Resources of Muscatine.
Mr. Oberhaus was born Feb. 18, 1925, in Muscatine, the son of Harry and Ruby McElrae Oberhaus. He married Joyce Reynolds May 1, 1955, in Davenport.
He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School and joined the Civil Air Patrol right out of high school.
He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps from October 1943 until March 1946.
He was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 33 years, retiring in 1991. He later worked for Muscatine Transportation for seven years.
He served as the director of retires and was very involved in the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was an avid Hawkeye fan.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Oberhaus of Muscatine; two sons, Rod Oberhaus and wife, Cassie of Marble Falls, Texas, and Mike Oberhaus of Honolulu, Hawaii; two daughters, Susan Oberhaus of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mary Reynolds and husband, Frank of San Diego, Calif.; two grandchildren, Michael and Anthony Reynolds; and four nephews, Jon, Tom, Pat and Joe Carroll.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Jeanne (Mary Louise) Carroll.
