MUSCATINE, Iowa – Hylan J. Phillips, 88, of Muscatine, died Monday, July 20, 2009, at Lutheran Homes.
The Rev. Dennis Hakes will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Phillips was born June 30, 1921, in Paducah, Ky., the son of John and Shellie Goodrich Phillips. He married Betty Peetz on April 18, 1946, in Muscatine.
He was a World War II veteran serving in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater.
He and his brother, Mylan opened Phillips Bros. Texaco in 1950. In the fall of 1963, they opened Phillips Bros. Sales and Rental, where they sold Dodge cars and trucks along with GMC trucks. In 1976, they opened Phillips Bros. Rental. In 2005, he started Hy-Value Motors.
He was a member of the Walnut Park Baptist Church, where he served as deacon for 50 years. He was also a member of the Muscatine Antique Car Club.
He enjoyed racing and owned several race cars since the middle 1970’s. He also enjoyed NASCAR, he owned an antique car, and was a Dodge enthusiast.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Betty Phillips of Muscatine; a son, Steven Phillips and wife, Janet, Muscatine; two grandchildren, Kristin Hassel and husband, Chris, and Timothy Phillips and wife, Alisa; and a sister, Virginia Bryant and husband, Vernon, of Colona, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Mylan and Leethon Phillips
