CANON CITY, Colo. — Helen L. Schmitt, 93, Canon City, formerly of Muscatine, passed away Sunday, Oct.18, 2009, at the Legacy Assisted Living Center in Canon City.
The Rev. Tom Parrott will officiate the services.
Following the interment a time of food and fellowship will be held at the New Hope United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to the Sangre de Cristo Hospice, 601 Greenwood Ave., Canon City CO 81212.
Mrs. Schmitt was born Sept. 1, 1916, in La Grange, Mo., the daughter of Walter S. and Loretta B. (White) Breedlove.
She married Robert O. Schmitt April 23, 1938, in Muscatine.
After graduating from Muscatine High School in 1934, she went to work for the Muscatine Pearl Works in their “fancy button department” and worked there until 1942.
She and her husband lived in Iowa City during the years of 1942-59. They returned to Muscatine and in the following years they owned and managed Schmitt's Sporting Goods, Henry's Drive-In and Sandy's Drive-In.
In 1974, she returned to the Muscatine Pearl Works and retired in 1978.
Above all, she was a loving homemaker and mom.
She enjoyed sewing and crocheting and belonged to many card clubs as well.
She and her husband were long-time members of the Otterbein United Methodist Church which then became the New Hope United Methodist Church in Muscatine.
She is survived by her children, Richard Schmitt and wife, Annette of Woodland Hills, Calif., and JoAnn Silver and husband, Jim of Westcliffe, Colo.; three grandchildren, Diane Levine and husband, John of League City, Texas, Mathew Schmitt and Brett Schmitt, both of Woodland Hills, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Steven, Kaylee, and Darian of Leaque City, Texas; and a sister, Alyce Lenz of Muscatine.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert in 1986; and two brothers, Walter of Muscatine and Robert of Kewanee, Ill.
