MUSCATINE, Iowa —Richard Dale Hugill, 91, Muscatine, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, Carrington Place of Muscatine.
Casketbearers will be his grandchildren.
Following the interment a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Faith United Church of Christ.
Memorials may be directed to the Faith United Church of Christ in his name.
Mr. Hugill was born Oct. 19, 1918, in Wahoo, Neb., the son of William E. and Anna M. (Keller) Hugill.
He attended schools in Wahoo, graduating from high school there in 1936, from Luther College in Wahoo in 1939 and from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with a bachelor’s in business administration in 1941.
He married Barbara Burnett, in Ames, May 8, 1942. They became the parents of three children, Diane, Richard D. Hugill Jr., and Marilyn (Lindy). Barbara Hugill died Nov. 9, 1957, and Diane on Sept. 25, 1979.
He served from 1942-45, in the U.S. Army in France, Belgium and Germany, attaining the rank of Captain in the field artillery.
After leaving the Army, he worked as an Internal Revenue Service Agent for the U.S. Treasury in Cedar Rapids for five years before moving to Muscatine in 1951 to join the Grain Processing Corp. as an accountant.
He was appointed assistant controller of GPC in 1952 and controller in 1962, a position he held for more than 20 years until his retirement in 1983.
Richard Hugill married Betty Ruth Kiser on Nov. 11, 1960, in Muscatine and they became the parents of one daughter, Mary Ann. Betty Hugill died on June 11, 2008.
Richard and Betty wintered in Arizona for more than 25 years and they took fishing trips to Canada each summer.
They also enjoyed boating on the Mississippi River and RV camping throughout the western United States. He was an avid rock collector and had a large collection of geodes and semi-precious stones, and he also fabricated silver jewelry for family members and friends.
He was a life member of the Muscatine Elks Club and a longtime member of the Geneva Country Club and served on the Muscatine Civil Defense Team.
He will be deeply missed by two daughters, Marilyn (Lindy) Wilson and husband, Duane, Mary Ann Trueg and husband, Doug, all of Muscatine; a son, Rick Hugill and wife, Barb Bailey of Iowa City; a former son-in-law, Del Marks and wife Nancy, Ames; seven grandchildren, Daniel Marks and wife, Teresa, Ames; Mary Sell and husband, Michael, Cedar Falls; Sunny Wilson, and fiancé, Cary Hubner, Geneseo, Ill.; Brian Wilson, Chicago; Clara Bailey-Hugill, West Branch; Silas Hugill, West Branch; and Haley Trueg, Muscatine; six great-grandchildren, Bryant, Reid, Jacob and Julia Marks, Ames; and Sophia, Diana, and Maxwell Sell, Cedar Falls; two brothers-in-law, Myron Kiser, Wilton, Richard Kiser and wife, Phyllis, McMurray, Pa.
