Iowa City man killed near Tipton

TIPTON, Iowa n An Iowa City man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a motorcycle accident on Moscow Road, just south of the Tipton interchange on I-80.

According to a Cedar County Sheriff's Office press release,

54-year-old Lester Charles Safley was killed when his 2003 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was struck from behind by a 1999 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by Kenneth J. Dotter-weich, 38, of Monticello. Dotterweich's truck is registered to Welter Storage Equipment Co. of Monticello.

Authorities said that Safley was driving south around

12:22 p.m. and was making a left turn into a business drive at 2096 Moscow Road, when Dotterweich's tractor-trailer struck the rear of Safley's motorcycle, lodging it underneath. The motorcycle caught on fire and was put out with extinguishers.

Safley was pronounced dead at the scene. Dotterweich was uninjured.

Weather and road conditions at the accident scene were determined by authorities as normal.

An investigation is continuing. Deputies of the Cedar County Sheriff's Office were assisted at the scene by the Muscatine County Sheriff's Office, the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa Department of Motor Vehicle Enforcement and the Cedar County Medical Examiners Team.

Personnel from the Tipton Fire Department, Tipton Ambulance and the Atalissa Police Department also assisted.
