COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa – Two young people died Saturday night after the car in which they were traveling struck a barn near Columbus Junction.
Jacob R. Haines, 22, of Mount Pleasant, was driving a Ford Mustang when the accident occurred. Haines and passenger Darby B. Gilbert, 17, of Libertyville, were both killed in the crash and taken from the scene by Stacey Lewis Funeral Home. A third occupant in the car, Kyle F. Allen, 19, of Sperry, was injured and taken by air ambulance to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, where a report on his condition was not immediately available..
Haines was southbound on Louisa County Road W66 when the car entered the ditch and struck a culvert, according to the Iowa State Patrol. The car vaulted over 115th Street and entered a farm where it struck a barn. The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, Columbus Junction Police Department, fire and rescue and ambulance assisted at the scene.
