Herbert Hoover Historic Site
WEST BRANCH, Iowa — Celebrate Memorial Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, May 25, at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum.
Living history interpreters will demonstrate crafts, games, school teaching and other activities from life in 19th century West Branch.
Games and home crafts demonstrations by costumed volunteers take place near the Herbert Hoover Birthplace Cottage.
Visit the 1853 West Branch Schoolhouse for historic school teaching activities.
Civil War Remembrance begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum with a discussion and concert of Civil War music by the acclaimed Marengo Civil War Band.
Following the concert at 2:15 p.m., Civil War re-enactors from the 24th Iowa Infantry will display their equipment and discuss camp life and combat during the war. The concert and discussion will be repeated at 3 p.m., the demonstration will repeat at 3:45 p.m.
Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum are in West Branch, off exit 254 on I-80.
Drury-Reynolds Cemetery
ROCK ISLAND COUNTY, Ill. — The 108th annual Memorial Day service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 24, at the Drury-Reynolds Cemetery, located in lower Rock Island County approximately four miles from Muscatine.
The guest speaker will be World War II veteran Claude Gifford.
The 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday will also be celebrated with a variety of activities. Bring pennies and five-dollar bills to donate in remembrance of Lincoln. All donations will go to the World War II Veterans Honor Flight, which allows veterans to tour the national war memorials in Washington D.C.
All veterans attending will be invited to participate in the Veterans’ March and Placing of the Wreath.
The 21-gun salute will be performed by the VFW Post No. 1565 honor guard from Muscatine.
Taps will be played by Janet Clark. Vocalist will be Stephanie Carey. Attendees will be able to place poppies on the graves of veterans. Refreshments will be served.
