MUSCATINE, Iowa - The Muscatine Police Department is sending out a reminder that it’s illegal to place any sign in the boulevard.

This includes garage sale, for sale, missing persons or any other sign that an individual or business might place on a pole or any area between the sidewalk and the street. Residents are not allowed to place signs on their mailboxes if they are located within that area.

Lt. Brett Talkington said the rule applies because that area is City property and the signs make streets look tacky. The biggest issue stems from people not taking them down for days or weeks after garage sales.

Persons who place signs on the boulevard could be cited with a simple misdemeanor but officials want to avoid having to enforce the nuisance issue, Talkington said.

“This is a big time for garage sale signs and we will be telling persons to get them off the boulevard or making them go around and remove them themselves,” he added. “People tend to forget from year to year that it is illegal.”
