MUSCATINE, Iowa — You’re never too old to get in shape.

That was the theme Thursday at the Muscatine Community Y’s Fit After 50 Wellness Fair.

The free event allowed participants 50 and over to try classes and games and was designed to promote healthy lifestyle options.

Melanie Steckel, health promotions services director at the Y, introduced the game of Pickleball at the fair and hopes the community takes interest so that the Y can start a Pickleball league. Pickleball is a paddle game similar to tennis and badminton where two to four players can participate.

“I always feel better when I leave the Y,” said Roberta Eichelberger, 74, who was among about a dozen participants who tried Pickleball. Eichelberger typically plays racquetball twice a week and said she’d be interested in playing Pickleball regularly if others would join her for competition.

Other classes offered during the Wellness Fair included Zumba, water exercise, ChicoMetrics, low impact aerobics and beginning indoor cycling. Free lunch was served and a registered dietician spoke about healthy habits.

Ron Miller, program director for the Special Olympics, joined the Y staff in demonstrating Pickleball techniques.

“I hadn’t heard of it before a couple of weeks ago but I tried it and sure worked up a sweat,” said Miller, 64, who will be retiring from his job at the Y on Dec. 31.

“We are hoping to recruit the baby boomers like me who are retiring and need to get into physical activities.”

Miller added that the public was also able to meet with staff and explore the Y so they could decide if they want to join. For more information, call 563-263-9922.
