MUSCATINE, Iowa — It’s a challenge to make sure a care center is so sanitary, organized and well run that the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals can’t find anything wrong.

But the staff at the Muscatine County Senior Resources Adult Day Center has met the challenge.

After a regular inspection in July, officials with the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals found no violations, minor or major, in the Center’s operations and facilities.

David Werning, public relations officer for the Department of Inspections and Appeals, said the Muscatine center is one of eight in Iowa to receive a perfect score during fiscal 2009, when 22 centers were inspected.

“This is something to be very proud of,” said Werning.

Barb Krall, executive director of Senior Resources, said she was delighted and surprised when she learned of the  perfect score.

Krall, who learned of the score in August, said she never had a clean slate during the 15 years she worked in long-term care facilities before coming to Muscatine.

Werning said one reason senior day centers tend to have fewer violations than long-term care facilities is because the atmosphere tends to be  neighborhood based.

Center customers and their families are often friends with staff members and many times they live in the surrounding area.

“They’re caring for people they know, so there is a bond,” said Werning.

The Center, at 1808 Mulberry Ave. provides a safe atmosphere for seniors who  may need varying degrees of assistance as they socialize and participate in activities.

Some families find bringing their loved ones to the Center for socialization and care is an alternative to permanent placement in a long-term care facility.

Other seniors come to the Center to enjoy the activities and meet new friends.

Krall credits her staff for the hard work  it does to keep the Center in top condition.

The Adult Day Team includes a program director, nurse, nursing assistant, activity coordinator, a social worker and consulting dietician, physical therapist, occupational therapist and podiatrist.

Hospice services are also available.
