Woman expected to plead guilty to murder

UPDATED: MUSCATINE, Iowa — Ann Marie Smith is expected to plead guilty today to killing Muscatine’s Zina Montoya.

A hearing has been scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Muscatine County Courthouse. Details about a possible plea agreement have not been released.

Smith allegedly shot Montoya multiple times over a cocaine deal Montoya’s son, Dexter Montoya, found his mother’s body on Aug. 25, 2008, in the yard of their trailer at 1365 Ripley Court.

Within days, Smith allegedly told an Iowa City suicide counselor she had killed Montoya.

She has been charged with first-degree murder and using a minor in the drug trade for using cocaine with Dexter Montoya and asking him to participate in a drug deal between her and his mother.

First-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence in Iowa.

Smith’s trial was set to begin at 9 a.m. Monday, July 20.
