MUSCATINE, Iowa — Muscatine-area residents can help keep Muscatine beautiful and have fun, too, on Saturday, Sept. 26.
That’s the evening the non-profit organization, Keep Muscatine Beautiful, will host Good Things Keep Happening, a riverfront fundraiser in the spirit of Muscatine Mayor Dick O’Brien’s familiar call, “Good things are happening in Muscatine.”
The event is designed to raise public awareness about beautification projects, litter prevention and getting the community involved in cleaning up Muscatine.
Keep Muscatine Beautiful treasurer Chris Boar said the evening will include musical entertainment with a DJ from T’zeer Entertainment, horse-drawn carriage rides, paddlewheel boat rides door prizes, and food and drinks, all included with the admission price.
“A lot of people want to go to the riverfront for the boat and carriage rides,” said Keep Muscatine Beautiful president Brenda Christensen. “So we decided to roll it all into one.”
Christensen said there will also be a silent auction and door prizes with more than $5,000 in merchandise and prize packages donated by area businesses.
The MuscaBus will be available to transport people from the Riverview Center to the Red Brick Building where they can board the Pearl Button paddlewheel boat.
The money raised will go toward projects such as a youth educational programs and a yard of the month program.
Past projects include the collection of more than 4 tons of trash during an Earth Day cleanup event in May and providing hanging flower baskets in the downtown area.
A large percentage of the proceeds will go toward Keep Muscatine Beautiful projects, said Christensen, because area business and industry and the city of Muscatine are donating food, prizes, riverfront transportation and time.
“We barely have any overhead,” she said.
