MUSCATINE, Iowa — Mary Odell, director of public health at Muscatine’s Unity Hospital, said several H1N1 clinics will take place in the next two weeks.
No appointment is needed for these walk-in clinics, but a parent or guardian will be required to be with their child to complete the consent.
Odell said confirmed cases of H1N1 have been reported in every school district in the county. It is important for students and parents to continue to be watchful for the signs of influenza and take action to prevent the spread of the virus at schools.
Symptoms are similar to seasonal flu and include a fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people with H1N1 flu may also have diarrhea and vomit.
Because H1N1 is spread by person-to-person contact, it is important for students who are ill to stay home from school until their cough significantly improves and they are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.
H1N1 vaccine is also available for pregnant women, primary caregivers, parents and siblings of babies under 6 months of age and for children 6 months-24 years by appointment.
Vaccine continues to be available for health care workers and emergency service personnel. Vaccines for these individuals are given by appointment at Unity Public Health by calling 563-263-0122.
Clincs include:
4-6 p.m. today, West Liberty Elementary School, 806 N. Miller St., for children ages 6 months-9 years.
8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 7, Unity Public Health, 1609 Cedar St., ages 6 months-24 years.
3:30-6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, Muscatine Community School District Offices, 2900 Mulberry Ave., ages 6 months-24 years
