MUSCATINE, Iowa — The leadership of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 86D has a contract in hand from Grain Processing Corp. and they are taking it to the membership.
The union plans to hold meetings at noon and 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the American Legion, 110 S. Houser St., Muscatine.
“It’s the same proposal, but now instead of two articles to have to reference back and forth between, there’s only one,” said Tony Newton, Local 86D fifth vice president.
A UFCW representative will be at the meeting to answer any questions.
“We’ll go over the proposal so the people can see what they’re going to vote on if they choose to,” Newton said. “That’s up to the membership. If a motion gets made, we’ve got to honor it if somebody seconds it.”
It’s been nearly 12 weeks since more than 300 workers were locked out of GPC after the union and the company couldn’t agree on a contract. GPC is a producer and seller of corn-based products. The company has since made two proposals. The second proposal, made on Oct. 23, is the one the membership will be reviewing Friday.
GPC confirmed that 300 copies of the proposal showing all the changes made since the last five-year contract, have been given to the union.
