FORT MADISON, Iowa – Columbus Community’s boys cross country team won the Class B division of the Fort Madison Invite held Thursday.

The Wildcats edged out Winfield-Mt. Union, 83-86, led by Sam Chaney’s top finish in 16 minutes, 49 seconds.

Chaney finished third overall, but both classes ran together and were separated at the finish line. Chaney was beaten to the line by Marshall Boyer of Burlington, Class A winner and ranked No. 8 in Class 4A and Frank Canady of Iowa City West, who is ranked No. 4 in Class 4A.

The Columbus girls finished fifth with 153 team points. Illini West (Carthage) was the girls team champion with 55 points.

WAPELLO, Iowa – Wapello took Pekin to five games, but the Panthers took home the win, 3-2, Thursday night.

Muskie sophs win

WELLMAN, Iowa – The Muscatine sophomore volleyball team took a 2-1 win over Davenport Assumption on Tuesday after taking third place at Mid-Prairie over the weekend.

Coach Laura Proffitt’s squad defeated the Lady Knights,

25-16, 17-25, 15-12 on Tuesday. The sophomores were led by Val Paca with six kills.

In the Mid-Prairie tournament, Muscatine defeated Cedar Rapids Washington

(12-21, 21-19, 15-11), Wilton

(21-15, 21-13) and IMS (23-21, 21-16) and lost against Tipton (12-21, 16-21).
