Service: 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Visitation: 4:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at the funeral home.
MUSCATINE, Iowa – Howard James Grell, 86, of Muscatine, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at the Muscatine Care Center.
The Rev. Paul Ostrem of the Zion Lutheran Church will officiate the service. Casketbearers will be Rodney Hirst, Jeff Longtin, Todd Hirst, Joshua Hirst, Mitchell Longtin, and Max Longtin. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery.

Mr. Grell was born on April 15, 1922, in Omaha, Neb., the son of James and Henrietta Belter Grell. He married Donna Furnas on March 29, 1947, in Muscatine.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy.
He retired from Muscatine Power and Water in 1983.
He was a member of the V.F.W. Post No. 1565. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling, crossword puzzles and he loved spending time with his grandsons.
Survivors include his daughters, Sharon K. Hirst and husband, Rodney, of Moline, Ill., and Lisa Longtin and husband, Jeff, of Muscatine; four grandsons, Todd Hirst, Joshua Hirst, Mitchell Longtin, and Max Longtin; and one brother, James Grell of Durant.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
