MUSCATINE, Iowa – Ryan Schueter fired a four-under par round of 68 in leading Davenport Central to the championship of the Muscatine Early Bird Golf Classic on Friday at the Muscatine Municipal Golf Course.

Schueter was the only golfer among the tournament’s 12 teams to break par on the par 72 Muni course. Three other Blue Devil golfers fired rounds in the 70s in giving Central a six-shot victory, 297 to 303, over Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

Finishing third was Bettendorf with a 306 total. The Bulldogs were led by Matt Solis, who was one of two golfers to shoot even-par rounds of 72.

The other 72 was by Muscatine freshman Josh Anderson, who had to settle for third in the individual race after the back-card used to  settle ties favored Solis.

The only other golfer for coach Jerry Teel’s Muskies to break 80 was junior Brody Smock, who shot a 76 as Muscatine finished sixth with a team score of 310.

Freshman Michael Canfield shot an 80 and rounding out Muscatine’s four counting scores was No. 1 player, sophomore Austin Young, who struggled to an 82.

The Muskies junior varsity team finished 11th in the tournament with a total of 329. Leading the way for coach Tom Randleman’s JV was Ethan Schroeder, the lone senior squad member, with a 79.

Muscatine and the other Mississippi Athletic Schools will be involved in the first half of the conference golf tournament at 9 a.m., Monday at the Hawthorn Ridge Golf Course in Aledo, Ill.
