DES MOINES, Iowa – The Large School East moved its record to 2-0 in the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Series on Friday.
Brance Rivera, the all-state infielder from Muscatine, helped the Large School East get off to a positive start with an RBI triple in the first inning en route to a 7-4 win over the Small School West.
The Large East, which has Muscatine High School coach Matt Rivera as one of its assistant coaches, scored twice in the opening inning and then added single runs in five of the next six innings.
The Small School East, which responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, was then held in check by West Delaware’s Garrett Linderwell, who allowed just one run the rest of the wasy. Linderwell scattered seven hits while striking out eight in the route-going performance.
Davenport Central’s Dallas Burke led the Large East’s
12-hit attack with three hits. Brance Rivera and Iowa City West’s Andrew Ewing each had two hits.
The Large School West joined the Large East at 2-0 by posting a 6-3 victory over the Small School East in Friday’s other pool play contest.
The Large West team jumped on Oelwein’s Colin Morgan for five runs in the first inning and then protected the lead.
The Small School East (0-2) is coached by Wilton’s Jake Souhrada. One of the team’s three runs was driven in by the Beavers’ Drake Austin.
Results of Saturday’s final pool play contests – Large East vs. Large West and Small East against Small West – and the tournament’s Sunday windup with the championship and consolation games were not available.
Sunday’s games, however, were a rematch of Saturday’s games because the Large East and Large West already had clinched the top two spots with their 2-0 records through Friday.
