MUSCATINE, Iowa – Three Muscatine High School softball players were named to the Class 4A Southeast All-District team named recently.

Six more from the area were named the Class 2A Southeast team.

Senior third baseman Danielle Frere, junior outfielder Chelsea Winegard and freshman pitcher Kayla Gaunt were the Muskie honorees on the 20-member Class 4A squad.

Durant and Wilton had two apiece and Louisa-Muscatine and West Liberty each had one on  the Class 2A team.

From Durant, named  were senior catcher Katelyn Lilienthal and senior third baseman Whittni Regan.

 Wilton’s honorees were sophomore catcher Kara Proctor and senior outfielder Alli Dieckman. Louisa-Muscatine was represented by junior infielder Bailie Bonnichsen and junior infielder Ashley Montelongo from West Liberty rounded out the area Class 2A      selections.

Frere, who has played regularly since she was a freshman, had a team-best 44 hits with a .370 batting average and recently represented Muscatine in the Iowa Softball Coaches Association All-Star Softball Series.

Winegard led the Muskies in batting average at .427. She finished with 41 hits, including five doubles and 21 RBI while missing the first few games of the season.

Gaunt, who has two years of pitching experience behind her as a freshman, led the team with a 19-5 record and had 0.72 ERA before the state tournament game she lost,   3-1, to Southeast Polk.

Repeat selections from last year were Dieckman and Montelongo. Montelongo was a Class 3A selection last year when the Belles were up a class.

The Southeast District coaches of the year were Larry Heath of Burlington in Class 4A, Jim White of Clear Creek-Amana in 3A, Amy Rath of Mid-Prairie in 2A and Highland’s Carrie Wieland in Class 1A.
