Services: 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, at Elliott Chapel, New London. Visitation: 9 a.m. Friday, family will greet friends for one half hour prior to service.
NEW LONDON, Iowa — Robert L. Newcomb Sr., 76, of New London and formerly of Muscatine, died Tuesday, June 17 at Henry county Health Center, Mount Pleasant.
The Rev. Steve Prickett will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Henry County honor guard. Bureial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine.
Mr. Newcomb was born Sept. 9, 1931, in Muscatine, the son of Henry and Cleda Ellis Newcomb and attended schools in Muscatine. He married Dorothy “Bonnie” Shanner. She died in 2001.
He was a truck driver for S.J. Hoffman in Muscatine for many years. He was also a commercial fisherman. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He was of the Christian faith. He loved fishing and western movies.
He is survied by four daughters, Dorothy Steinbeck of Wilton, Dian Cluster of Muscatine, Cleda Brobston of Danville, and Candy Roberts of Festus, Mo.; three sons, Robert Newcom Jr. of West Branch, John Newcomb of Muscatine and David Newcomb of Muscatine; 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a granddaughter and his longtime companion, Gertrude DeWitt.
